Now that the primary season is underway, the elections loom in November, but until then, we have to wade through candidates, donors, super PAC’s and dark money. In my Super PAC trilogy, you can read about the time just before the 2010 Citizen’s United decision in the first novel, and follow the super PAC and dark money threats after 2010 in the other two novels. There is no surprise we find ourselves with a shaken democracy and a republic begging for change. The media, and I mean ALL of the media, is having an incredibly profitable year because of the money flowing into the election cycle, so you don’t really feel the doom and gloom behind the process because they just keep cashing checks. In some nice work by CREW you may gain some valuable insight into the dark money dilemma involving certain IRS codes allowed for some non-profits. And as always, Open Secrets has done yeoman’s work in dissecting what has become a $300 million money jar for the GOP. Those of you on the other side of the aisle, don’t complain too much, you may not have as much money, but everyone is guilty here.
If you don’t believe that money has an influence in politics, local, state, and federal elections, please pull your head out of the sand and take a deep breath. No matter what side you’re on, you’d have to agree that our system is in dire straights. If you think it’s okay to purchase elections because you feel that strongly that everyone should live like you, then all of this is moot. If you feel that people should have freedom of choice and a fair shake in the process, please become active and delve deep into the super PAC’s and dark money influence so you can see, feel, and hear the reality. Otherwise your vote may be moot and the elections will be decided for you.
