So over the last few months, all my writing has gone toward uploading the journals, editing manuscripts, and getting samples out to publishers. In between, summer has begun, in earnest, and I, now, am rarely inside. Then last night I take a walk and end up at Chandler’s for a nightcap adding a very rich Pots de Crème to the Rusty Nail; why, I don’t know, but I am too old for this stuff – this stupid stuff. I didn’t need the nightcap, but it felt good to hang out and visit, and I certainly did not require an amazing dessert that I knew would keep me up all night. Alas, I ate and drank, and then I was awake. I sit today wondering when my sixty-year old self will come to grips with not being able to act like I’m twenty-one. The entire day was filled with outdoor chores; trips to the bank and post office; a long bike ride to buy bread at Breadworks; and finally, relaxing in the garden reading and doing a crossword. Christine came home and I made dinner for her. We had salad and halibut with a nice Cote de Rhone. A perfect day. Then stupid stuff. Now, I enjoy my age by continuing to be active at the gym, on the bike, and in the kayak, but my body definitely limits me to a particular dietary requirement: NO LATE NIGHT ALCOHOL AND CHOCOLATE! Stupid stuff. I don’t venture there but maybe a couple times a year, usually, when I’m visiting somewhere and out with people having a good time, but never by myself. Never. Why last night? I think I was expanding. Letting go of stress and being comfortable in a town I love knowing I’d run into people I knew and have conversations and exchange wonderful sentiments, and all of that happened. I walked home, kissed my wife, we went to bed, and then I was awake. Suffering. But I’m better this morning and will travel to Washington, D.C. and babysit our newest grandchild, and have a glorious time – and not do stupid stuff.

Age doesn’t seem to offer enough protection against doing stupid stuff and making newbie mistakes.
