My new friend the TV

April 15, 2018

TelevisionPictureSo the snowstorm happened and with Christine gone I was looking for a new friend. No one could venture far from their home. Some couldn’t even get into their car, so I shoveled for what seemed like an eternity, came back inside and found this strange large rectangle staring at me with a little red eye in the corner. I took the remote control out of the basket and pushed the power button. I sat. Jimmy Stewart was in court defending Ben Gazzara with Lee Remick watching. Eve Arden smiled and Arthur O’Connell wavered. I kept watching. With a quick push of the pause button, I went to the kitchen and made breakfast, scrambled eggs with tomato and feta. The new coffee was ground and before returning to my cinema, I made sure a new pot was brewing. Back to the show, I sat through Anatomy of a Murder and ventured right into New Mexico with John Wayne and a cast of hundreds defending the Chisum Ranch. A couple of pauses and fresh coffee took me to binge watching The West Wing. You know? Martin Sheen and crew could do a much better job then what we have now. Why is this of any interest? I’ll tell you why. IT”S APRIL 15th!!!! I should be outside pruning roses, mulching gardens and fertilizing the lawn. I should be kayaking the bay and watching birds from the pier. Instead, me and my new friend the TV are having an affair. Yes. It’s hard to admit but it’s true. I crave the glow and subtle intelligence sucking sounds leaving me a bleak, blinded, jellied soul with no hope of recovery for the foreseeable future. Generally come the end of March, I barely see the inside of my home until November. The environs outside offer tantalizing spiritual growth and a connection to the rhythms of life. But no. I’m stuck pandering to a screen captivating me with muck. Oh the humanity! Wait, I hear the theme. Excuse me, the West Wing is on again….
