About being lazy

Sitting at the writing desk trying to concoct a tight and easy read I realize I should really write about being lazy. Now lazy differs in all of us, but for me, it means I get distracted from what I should be doing and that’s writing. For days and weeks in a row I will write.  It may be in the new novel, maybe an article for the magazine or paper, or it might simply be a journal entry while I’m contemplating life; in any case, when I take a day and don’t write I feel lazy. I exercise everyday. I go outside everyday. I am never physically lazy, but when my mind gets lazy I feel horrid. And lately that means television. When Turner Classic Movies begins its yearly jaunt into 31 Days Before Oscar, I’m a lost cause. Casablanca, Citizen Kane, Gone With The Wind, well, you get the picture. The other night was a rash of movies around WWII, and I fell off the deep end. But in defense of the marathon movie watching, they were all about issues I am now writing about. I’ve had some great group sessions talking about the past, and I’ve had some great research sessions at the Library of Congress, but to watch Hollywood’s take on the subject really helped. So is that being lazy? Maybe not, but a day without writing for me is like a true Sabbath. Perhaps that’s the true sense of this rant: When you’re not doing anything are you really lazy or just taking a break? Maybe the mind and body do need a rest, and maybe, just maybe, the world won’t pass you by in twenty-four hours.
