Killing Bill O'Reilly

May 19, 2015

bill-oreilly-fox-news_zps244e0823We’ve had Killing Lincoln, Killing Kennedy, Killing Jesus, and Killing Patton, what if we had Killing Bill O’Reilly? Now I am in no way condoning violence, hatred or an attitude which would lead to any harm coming Mr. O’Reilly’s way, but in using the title of his books and the probable reality, story lines, and conspiracies he contemplates, what if he and others like him in the realms of twenty-four hour news and personality broadcasts all disappeared? On a day-to-day basis I am alarmed and mortified to hear people in the communities in which I live and work spew negativity, world-hate, and, most of all, fear. So I experimented for a few weeks listening and watching various pundits, newscasts, and personalities with a concentrated effort instead of simply catching-up. Some folks are fairly quiet in their opinions and profess to report what the news editors offer. Some are purely about their own personality and how much splash they can make that day, and others are absolutely bent on making most anyone who listens to them afraid to step out of their own door – day or night. This last group is the one I am most alarmed with. What’s worse is that ninety percent of the people I am with all day every day believe the fear mongers. Moreover, they believe these folks more than the science or rationale presented that actually dispels most of what the fear mongers say. My opinions and research have to be accurate for writing and  I take great pride in making sure all sides of an issue are recognized – even if I disagree, sometimes facts are facts and you have to accept what is real. I’m not so sure about Mr. O’Reilly and the other contestants striving for most believed talking head on radio or TV. And this is not about anyone’s personal life. We’ve all got skeletons and closets not yet opened; this discussion is about fear reporting and why. The world is not a panacea. The world is damaged in many places and we do need to take notice, but for purposeful reasons and not money, power, and ratings. So much of what people hear is so far over the top that many have lost sight of reality. Lost so much that when reality and history are presented from undisputed facts, they can’t believe any different. And the Bill O’Reilly’s walk to the bank everyday and deposit multitudes of money without blinking an eye letting the social fight happen in their wake. There have been myriad articles and research addressing this topic, but it only seems to get worse. I suggest we practice being human to each other, stop listening to the 24-hour fear, and enjoy life with our neighbors.
