A Day in the Life of a Writer

March 19, 2019

martiniSome time has passed since I’ve done “A Day in the Life of a Writer” but today was a good one. You see, the afternoon in the Symons’ Wine Cellar was quiet, and having a “By the Glass” article due for “HomeLIfe” magazine, I decided to contemplate the life of a martini. Well, maybe like, what makes a good martini. So into Chandler’s – A Restaurant I ventured and engaged Doug, a friend and colleague as bartender; Jenny, a wonderful server; cook Logan; and the Chef of the day, Scott. Doug mixed up a Hendrick’s martini with no vermouth and a lime twist and a more traditional style martini with Gypsy Vodka (a locally distilled spirit from High Five Spirits) and two olives using a splash of dry vermouth. My bias bends toward the Hendrick’s since this is a go-to for me, but I must say, the traditional vodka martini with two olives was delightful. But to my point, this was my workday. Some may find it difficult to imagine but this is what I do. I write local, interact local, and have fun locally. This town of Petoskey highlights my life each NewStudio2morning I walk out the door toward my writing studio. Or, on other days, a saunter to Roast & Toast for coffee with the usual’s. Tomorrow I get to do  a similar gig at Mackinaw Trail Winery where two friends of mine, Ben Slocum of Beards Brewery and Ben Walker of Roast & Toast, will help me complete a Taste-Off article for “The Graphic.” Then I shall traipse over to the Carnegie Library (Petoskey District Library) and take part as an invited guest of WCMU radio for a taped radio program re: the Great Lakes and living on the water. I would suspect I will drop a word or two about my kayak trip. All in all a marvelous two days, actually, as a day in the life of a writer. Now, where did that olive roll to?
