A Normal Day with Humphrey and Ingrid

May 4, 2020

So, during this streak of COVID, we’ve done our part with masks, distancing, shopping for others, and making minimal trips for necessities, but Sunday, May 3rd, was the most normal day we’ve had. And while waiting for the sun to heat things up outside, it all began with coffee and “Casablanca.” Once in the open air, a long walk along the waterfront cascaded into gardening and placing the finishing touches on the landscape around the house, but only after an interlude: A concert with Pete Kehoe on Facebook, dancing in the dining room, and a couple of cribbage games while drinking champagne. I mean, really, this was one of our normal Sunday’s on a fine spring day: “Play it Sam. Play ‘As Time Goes By.'” In the evening, we had a virtual cocktail party with our best friends, Jack and Ruth Ann, then parlayed a few salmon filets into dinner and opened a bottle of wine to boot. By the time darkness prevailed, we were ready for another round of Dominoes: “I’m shocked! Shocked to know there’s gambling going on in here!” We know the virus is still lurking about: “Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine.” But the routines of handwashing, and as a bonus for us, the experience of being clinical instructors helps us to be mindful of what we need to do, always. Thus creating a rather normal day: “It seems that destiny has taken a hand.” We took advantage of the warmth and sunshine. We took advantage of the knowledge that a future exists. We lived like we knew how we may have to be for a while, and it was comfortable: “Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon, and for the rest of your life.” Whatever we have to do for public safety and the good of the whole is paramount: “Round up the usual suspects.” Give it a shot. Have a normal day knowing what the new normal has to be and get comfortable. It’s all temporary: “…this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.”
