Serve the Soul

March 31, 2020

After the best sleep in weeks, I awoke with a mission to serve the soul. For me that’s disengaging the material world and entering the realm of Nature; entering the Universal meanderings of nothing. One of my favorite little reads is a 1982 classic, “The Tao of Pooh.” I’ve used the text in lectures, and I’ve used the text in confirmation of my simple life. Now, I use the words as a reminder of what’s real. We’re in the midst of a pandemic. We’re in the midst of a mild to moderate panic. Yet, the Natural world continues around us. I took a drive to Wilderness State Park and walked the length of the park. I walked to where the islands are to the west and the water won’t let you walk anymore. I walked to understand the eagles overhead, and perched in the trees, they look at me like they always look at me: Like I belong in their brood. I watched mergansers. I watched pileated woodpeckers, hawks, and seagulls. I sat on the shore and watched the lake stroke the beached ice with a popping sound as the ice decides whether to melt or fight for another day. There were rocks to scavenge, and there was driftwood to collect. No matter the human reality, the world doesn’t stop spinning. The energy of the Universe doesn’t collapse. Our perceived halt is only in our consumerism and our drive for continual wealth. We continue to breathe the oxygen and walk along the pathways we’ve created. Times such as these beg the question: What path have you created? It took a lifetime for me to resolve that question, and in doing so, found a genuine passageway to contentment in the harshest of times. A soul of compassion, empathy, and a desire to be one with Nature’s rhythms around me. Put on your oldest sweater, your dirty jeans, and some hiking boots and walk the world in awe of what you’ve forgotten about life without “things.” Serve the soul. Your soul.
