Home spaces

March 28, 2020

For years as a journalist, I ventured into people’s residences and businesses and wrote stories for magazines about home spaces. There was always a question I wanted to ask, but didn’t: Do you use all of these spaces? What I found fascinating was how, sometimes, ostentatious some homes were, and that the businesses that supplied them with materials were so very proud – as they should be. I was not there to judge, but I can’t deny the fact that I was curious to know if all the grandeur was used. Restating a theme through all of my books and writings, Christine and I are simple. We have found a simple life, generally, leads to less drama. Granted, we are blessed with the fringes of our lives, such as children and careers, that make that possible, but those circumstances took a lot of work to generate. Finding a peaceful space in life, as we aged, was a purposeful effort. Why this lengthy intro to this quiet Saturday, March 28th, just another day within this pandemic? Because we used our home to enjoy our lives, today. After coffee and quiet in the Reading/Meditation Room, we set up a tournament of games in the Dining Room. Some champagne, some cribbage, and backgammon, and the games were on! As these unfamiliar days would have it, a crisis ensued at Christine’s company, and I took to some crosswords while sitting in the Front Parlor. Eventually, we made it back to the cribbage board and pegged another game. Such is life during these days of sheltering, but we did walk the waterfront and return to prepare and produce an amazing stir-fry; then we dipped into the Media Room for some entertainment. Soon, the bedroom will be softly lit, and books will be in hand. Using home spaces is necessary. Using them with themes and love is lifegiving.

I used to play cribbage with my dad back in the day, but I don’t remember all of it now. Fifteen-two, fifteen-four, and a pair for six. That’s about it.
Cards in the dorm were Gin, Hearts, Pinochle, and Euchre. I wasted so many hours playing those stupid games, it’s probably a miracle I graduated.
Is the room in your picture upstairs? I really like it.

The room is downstairs. Thanks, Tom. Time is never wasted while playing cards.
