The kayak trip is done and re-entering society is upon me. The most amazing adventure of my life took place over 2 months and traversed Lake Superior from Grand Marais, Minnesota to Grand Marais, Michigan, and while dangerous in many moments and days, the journey was well worth the effort and risk. Living with the rhythms of Nature and the patterns of the lake, I evolved beyond the worry of society. I’m home. I’m drinking scotch, sitting in the Media Room and enjoying quiet. A thousand miles of Lake Superior makes for a different life. It makes for a different future. The mundane and the routine exist no longer, yet the appreciation for everything I have has increased a hundred-fold. Gratitude became more important than ego. Sincerity and openness to others was paramount to survive. You see, I used no smart phone, no GPS, no anything. I kayaked, landed and sought what I needed. Sometimes that meant walking for miles and sometimes it meant I stayed on a beach ten feet from the water and never moved. Whatever the case, the journey was one of survival and giving thanks. I have so much to say and so much to write, but knowing I’m months behind on this post, I wanted to get the ball rolling. There will be lectures, talks, articles, and conversations, but most of all lots of time in the studio gazing over another Great Lake, Michigan, and wondering what life would be rounding more points, coursing into more bays and coves, and twisting through swells and white caps surviving on the thinnest of threads. Kayaking Lake Superior for a thousand miles was the most dangerous and the most exhilarating thing I’ve ever done in my life. I will continue these adventures and continue to prove life moves on through depression, suicidallity, and a stale life. Carpe Diem.
