On this warm spring day in June, I believe it’s a splendid day for a wedding – so, I shall perform one. Several months ago, one of my favorite people asked me to be the Officiant at his wedding, accepting, I always take great effort to be mindful of what that means. Today will be no different. No matter the discourse swirling around the concept of marriage, the act remains two people focused on each other and a life wishing to be lived in tandem. Preparations are generally many, even for the lightest of ceremonies, and this one has the hallmarks of a lot of work. A new house, spiraling career ladders, many friends and family all portend a rather lively event. I’ve done several weddings, and thus far, I see or hear from the couples, often, and that always makes me smile. The reflection today is how life moves on. Period. Having my yearly physical, getting the Will and Durable Power of Attorney prepared for my Lake Superior kayak trip, spending two days for a gear check, returning from Chicago after my brother’s successful heart procedure, and preparing for the wedding, cements the reality of life proceeding no matter the emotions or actions around you. The wedding today has been discussed, for years, and the day has finally arrived. My mortality is limited – unfortunately – and elements need to be in place for my endtimes. The kayak trip will happen, again, after years of preparation, and my brother survives. Life continues. If none or any of this was to happen, cars would go by outside, the weather would weather, people would wake up, drink coffee and breathe, and the world would revolve on its axis as it has for billions of years; thus, today is a splendid day for a wedding.
