Always in the moment

April 19, 2018

NewStudio5Sorry for the last couple of days, but this thirty inches of snow has produced an early brain death for me until today when I was glad I am always in the moment. The typical life of a bohemian was today. I walked downtown with my computer and shopping bag and into Roast & Toast for coffee. After an hour of conversation ranging from the 1960’s through Vietnam and into the recent snow storm, I retreated to my studio, momentarily, before I walked over to Symons General Store and ordered a breakfast sandwich. I told Jess there was no hurry and went down to the bar of Chandler’s, worked on a crossword puzzle and kibitzed with the guys about hockey. After eating my Symons sandwich, I walked back home and showered so I could actually present myself at an Education Committee meeting at Crooked Tree Arts Center, then back over to Chandler’s for lunch. I ran over to the studio, grabbed my computer and worked at the bar while I ate. Satisfied with my writing, I went back to the studio and read the paper and finished a couple of crossword puzzles. Falling asleep, I was awaken by my son and we talked about fishing, golf, and his life in Washington D.C. Out of my NewStudio4favorite leather pub chair and out of the studio to the gym, I met my buddy George and we had a great workout discussing the trials and tribulations of Sean Hannity and wishing someone would fire the President. Done, I closed up my locker and walked back to Chandler’s to have a birthday drink with one of the line-cooks who I met several years ago then performed the wedding ceremony for his mother and step-father. He was late so I was pressed into service as the Maitre D and filled the restaurant. At every point of the day, I was living in the moment. At every point of the day, I was enjoying my life as it unfolded. Spring is late and clouds have been thick, but the sun came out and life progressed. Two choices could be had the last week: Hate the snow and drown in depression or live in the moment at hand. My days are like this a lot. My days are mindful, for the most part. It’s a tough way to live and a tough road to hoe, but the payoffs far out weigh the days I have difficulty. Always in the moment is a recovery lifestyle that has saved my life. You should try it sometime.
