Life of a writer with deadlines

February 9, 2017

treesandsnowThe life of a writer with deadlines is a much different world than the life of a writer finding his way through the meanderings of a novel. I’ve recently picked up three regular writing assignments. Fun? Yes. intriguing? Sure. But damn, a deadline. Not only that, I have The Penny under edit resulting in re-writes and critical thinking challenging the creative process. Editing is essential and no finished product is ever invented on paper without editing, yet, I’m transported into a four quarter box of life. I did manage to break out of one corner and draft a new novel which shall be uncovered in the near future. It’s a blast. Some pre-readers are having fun with the pace and tone while I continually add detail. Don’t get me wrong, I love my daily life as a writer, especially since it keeps me away from the daily news of living in our new-found fascist state. Ugly. We’re into the cloudy days of February, so the gym and a meditative yoga practice help. There has been some bourbon, scotch and wonderful new dishes at parlor time in the evening, and most recently, a wonderful visit with some old friends to ease the burden of gray; however, the deadlines loom. I’ve even had to implore the use of a calendar. That’s right. I not only have no use of a car and smart phone, I haven’t needed a calendar in months. We went to OfficeMax and found a simple one for four bucks. Actually fits in the old leather Day-Timer I’ve had for what seems like an eternity. I guess I can mark my deadlines and add some missives on the other dates. This mild rant is nothing compared to the daily doldrums of a cubicle, punch-clock, or a boss peering over my shoulder. I’ll take the life of a writer with deadlines anytime. If only there was some sun…Q
