Kentucky’s signal to the country has been sent and should make everyone shutter: We elected a very wealthy man as governor, he likes our religion, and wants to take health care away from 500,000 people – many of whom have never had health care. Why is this so important to notice? Because it’s the same sentiment that we continually see uneducated voters own while being dangled like puppets. First of all as I always reiterate, I do believe in the free market, I do not begrudge people for their wealth, but I do believe in an improved social capitalism. Kentucky has elected a very wealthy man who made his millions by investing in companies and funds that placed jobs and wealth outside of our country. He then takes money from PAC’s and others that support his religious and political views leaving the average Kentuckian to scrape by on whatever they can find. Mr. Bevin would rather have insurance behemoths and for-profit hospitals that make up his portfolios continue feeding him money while 500,000 people have nothing. Did he tell the state electorate that those who he wants to kick out of the Affordable Care Act will cost taxpayers more in unfunded care, that his insurance backers continue to raise rates to protect their shareholder equity while blaming the ACA, and that his religious hypocrisy essentially amounts to the same Sharia Law so many conservatives fear? (In other words they don’t want a religious group writing laws, while the Religious Right does just that.) As our society changes and the largest group of wealthy conservative donors see their majorities erode around the country, we will see more elections like the one in Kentucky until we all realize we cannot survive broken. The Mason-Dixon Line is being redrawn with a wealthier pen, and as Lincoln said, “As a Nation of freemen we must live through all time or die by suicide.”
