Local Elections: Beware the money

March 20, 2014

Beware of the money in local elections. Matt Bai, On Politics for Yahoo, discusses the Koch brothers and their spending in local elections. (http://news.yahoo.com/the-kochs-make-their-political-money-count-022742677.html). In this blog you’ve already been warned that the local mayor may someday be placed into office with the help of people and monies far from local. Even foreign companies or investors who may wish to bring influence to a certain part of the U.S. have an avenue for such a scenario. In the Super PAC novels, you begin to get the picture that will soon be the reality – foreign money finding local places  anywhere oil, gas, and fracking occur. And why not? Since Citizens United, we’ve become easy pickings. I’m no investigative journalist, and I’m no harbinger of conspiracy theories, but I was in the PAC game long enough to know it doesn’t matter where the money comes as long as a candidate sees a future in the big money game of politics. I make my rounds around Little Traverse Bay visiting clinics and clients, and I am amazed what people believe connected to super PAC political campaigns: they believe whatever they say – without question. When I ask if they knew who financed the info and what the true cause is behind the information, they always respond, “No.”  So when you gripe about who sits in the mayor’s chair downtown while suddenly local laws change and you feel drilling under your front room, look to people with Koch brothers type money hanging around your local 7-Eleven buying a mayor-to-go.
