Lobbyists and Legislators

July 22, 2013

It’s become an interesting turnabout. The legislators courting the lobbyist. Some folks on K Street and on any street in any local state capitol who carry influence, are being lobbied by legislators for that influence. Now, this is not a new game, but as politics shifts into another stratosphere of finance, the lines are becoming blurred. The same day I witnessed this first hand, I was also working on the third novel when a gentleman gave me his story. He worked in a state legislature where the elections were every two years. His majority function was to work the re-election campaign immediately after the legislator he worked for was elected. And this gentleman was NOT one of the campaign staff, but a staff person on the legislative payroll. He went on to say that the competition is so fierce for the dollars and between parties that a détente has been reached so no one gets the other in trouble. What’s more amazing is that the average person STILL doesn’t do anything but listen to radio and TV thinking the other guy is wrong. The apathy amongst the electorate allowing the above to continue is more disturbing than ever. So why is this news? It’s a matter of making sure someone keeps rattling the cage in the hopes someone listens. With Citizens United now in full bloom, it’s just a matter of time before America has it’s own spring revolution.
